There’s a version of dynasty startup strategy that looks great in a spreadsheet. You take young players, you “win value,” you stack assets, and you walk away feeling like you just built a 10-year contender. And then the season starts, your team is somehow mediocre, and two years later, you’re still trying to figure out how you never actually got good. That happens because most people treat startup drafts like a collection of picks. The sharp players treat it like building a portfolio with a very specific timeline. And if you don’t decide what that timeline is, the draft will decide for you. A message to the commissioners before we start Before you even get to that point, though, the foundation of the league matters more than people want to admit. A dynasty league only works if the structure supports it. That means including rookies or rookie picks directly in the startup draft rather than splitting them off. The moment you separate those, you create two different economies, and it doesn’t take long before values stop lining up and trades get weird. It also means playing with people who actually want to play dynasty. Managers who trade, who stay engaged, who don’t disappear the second their team isn’t competitive. And it means having real rules in place, especially around things like tanking and trading future picks. If someone can deal away their next two years of firsts and vanish, the league isn’t built to last. None of this is flashy, but it’s the difference between a league that thrives and one that slowly dies. Be water my friends SUBSCRIBE TO DLF PREMIUM!
