Salary cap dynasty leagues are the best! They’re the most challenging, the most fun, and offer more strategic opportunities to every manager than redraft, standard dynasty or even the most complex multi-copy keeper league. One of the primary strategic decisions cap managers have to make revolves around contract distribution. It’s obvious we all prefer impact players on low-salaried, long-term contracts, but no matter what settings we play on, those deals come few and far between. So, how do we decide on a strategic approach to assigning contract lengths? Let’s discuss the strategies. In my opinion, there are three definitive strategies salary cap managers use when assigning contracts –the dynasty approach, the re-draft approach, and the gunslinger approach. Note: Most of the advice in this article is intended for those playing in leagues where managers bid the contract length and salary in free agent auctions, although it can be helpful for those who play in leagues that decide contract lengths following a traditional free agent auction, which only requires managers to bid the player’s salary. The Dynasty Approach I have to admit it's easy to be lured into using a dynasty team-building mentality in salary cap for anybody who’s played traditional dynasty and yearned to build a buzz-saw roster that dominates year after year because they have a core roster of super-star players. Typically, the dynasty approach uses a long-term strategy of building through draft picks and hand-picking players in the free agent auction who can take the team over the top.
