When I wrote about contract distribution in salary cap leagues a couple months back, I pointed out three approaches to assigning contract lengths, the dynasty approach, the redraft approach and the gunslinger approach. The advice was intended for managers in leagues where they bid the salary AND the contract length in a startup or free agent auction, such as the excellent leagues offered at League Tycoon. With free agent auctions in full swing and startups still happening, I thought I’d expand on that article to give some potential player targets managers using each approach might aim for as they build their teams. The Dynasty Approach As I stated in the first article, the dynasty approach uses a long-term strategy of building a team through solid draft pick decisions and hand-picked players in free agency who can help build sustained success. With most first and second-year players already on rosters, let’s focus on some young players who could be available this year via free agency or trade to help build a long-term winner. Sam LaPorta , TE DET While his production has gone downhill over each of the last two seasons since his rookie breakout, LaPorta plays in a premiere offense with one of the most accurate quarterbacks in Jared Goff . The herniated disc he suffered last season forced him to miss eight games but he will be healthy this season and could be in line for a resurgent stat line like the 86 catch, 886 yard, 10 touchdown rookie campaign he posted in 2023. Despite down numbers in 2025, LaPorta posted a career high in catch rate (81.6%) and yards-per-target (10.0), proving he can be incredibly efficient. With the change in offensive coordinator to Drew Petzing, an increase in targets – particularly red zone targets where he has shined – should be expected, as Petzing was the OC who oversaw Trey McBride ’s breakout a few seasons ago. Laporta is worthy of 6%-8% of your cap – depending on tight end scoring – for up to four seasons, but I'd prefer to have him on a three-year deal. Josh Downs , WR IND SUBSCRIBE TO DLF PREMIUM!
