The summer slowdown is in full effect. Spring practices are done. The waiting game for week 0 is upon us. So, what better time to fire off my first set of devy ranking tiers? Let’s jump right into this with a look at the quarterback position and a breakdown of a few of my favorite players in each tier! Tier 1 Notes Yes, you are reading this correctly… CJ Carr is my top quarterback, not just in the upcoming draft, but overall, in devy. He is pretty easily the most polished quarterback in all of college football. He plays with tremendous poise in the pocket and works through his reads at a pro level. Carr has great touch and accuracy on his passes with the arm talent to make any throw. Add in the fact that he has the mobility to make plays with his legs and to me, he is the total package. Next is a three-pack of guys you will see at the top of most boards with Arch Manning , Julian Sayin , and Dante Moore . All three guys have shown the ability to play at a high level and against top competition. Drew Mestemaker will be the wildcard in the group and a name you will likely start to hear more and more. He is one of the cleaner prospects in terms of his mechanics. He plays well within the pocket and has a live arm. The biggest question I have for him is the level of competition he faced. Playing at North Texas, you are just not seeing top-level defenses or even having to keep up with high-level offenses. He transfers into Oklahoma St and while the Big 12 is no juggernaut, he will see a sizeable uptick in competition. Can he continue to produce at a high level while showing the same strengths? I believe so, which is why I have him as a tier 1 QB. Tier 2 Notes This next group of players are those with upside but a few more question marks. Darian Mensah is another player I have grown to love during this process. He is another fairly clean QB in the way he plays from the pocket and processes the game. He has a quick release and a live arm. He transfers to a Miami team where he will have a ton of top-end talent to throw to but will also have some high expectations. But make no mistake, this is a player who has a high chance at being a top-ten pick in the upcoming draft. Keelon Russell didn’t get much opportunity as a freshman but the tape I did watch, including his high school tape, looks fantastic. He has the ability to make all the throws but adds in a dynamic running ability. He is a guy I see balling out this year and firmly putting his name as the top guy in the 2028 class. This tier ends with a few guys with a ton to prove. LaNorris Sellers has the look of an NFL QB and has shown flashes of brilliance but inconsistent play has hurt his stock. This will be a big prove-it year for him to show he can play at a high level week in and week out. Bryce Underwood is not much different – a QB with all the tools and size you could ask for but at times, he looked lost out there, which has made people question his upside. I still believe in what I saw of him coming out and think he can take the next step in his development. Tier 3 Notes This is the toolsy tier. These are players with all the tools you want to see from a QB but some other questions that make you less confident in what their future looks like. Faizon Brandon is a perfect example. Brandon has incredible arm talent. He can drive the ball downfield with great accuracy and zip. He has the size you look for in the position. My only worry is the development, or lack thereof, of QBs in this sy…
